Description of current housing

Indoor area -- the chimp house is designed for diversity of group formation and enclosure styles.  The interior design allows movement throughout the building. The chimps can choose to watch staff activities or move to a group or private space at will. The indoor building includes:

•     several multi level areas for various group formations
•     ten privacy areas, including a  two-level “apartment” for chimps with social difficulties
•     two large gymnasium play areas
•     two multi level large rooms
•     an interconnecting tunnel system that allows protected contact for introductions  as  well as “cross-overs” for changing group formations
•     a kitchen, where food is prepared
•     an observation area
•     a clinic/surgery room  across from a squeeze room and cushioned wake-up room

Outdoor area -- islands and grounds areas sit on a total of 200 acres of field, woods and pond and include:

•     overhead “skywalk” tunnel system  over pond, fields, indigenous wildlife and natural and planted gardens; the elevation allows browsing in trees
•     three islands with climbing structures, landscaped  stone formations, water, vegetable gardens and trees
•     a surrounding moat surrounded by electric fencing

The chimphouse and outdoor area sit on 5 acres of land about half of which is the islands/ moat and half the footprint of the multilevel interior. The skywalks span considerable acreage of the property.
